On June 8, 2023, at the headquarters of Nguyen Van Trang, Hoa Sen University, Faculty of Languages – International Cultures organized Session #9 of the Professional Development Workshop Series, aiming to support and enhance research capabilities, as well as provide an academic exchange forum for lecturers.

Dr. Nguyen Phuong Lien continued the basic data analysis of the survey on STATA software from Session #8 with more in-depth analyses, specifically Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), mediator testing, and some other examinations.

Following that, Dr. Le Dao Thanh Binh An briefly presented the research ideas she is nurturing and has already begun to implement. It is hoped that after this sharing session, participants will feel motivated and confident to actively present and exchange ideas on the specialized issues they are pondering or the academic areas they are interested in.

Session #9 concluded with valuable lessons, forming research groups with urgent topics in the field of education in Vietnam.

On April 20, 2023, Faculty of Languages and International Cultures organized Session #7 of the Academic Development Workshop Series with the participation of Dr. Nguyen Phuong Lien and research student Vo Tan Phuong Hong.

Dr. Nguyen Phuong Lien opened the workshop with a guide on ‘identifying research gaps and building research hypotheses,’ marking the beginning of the series on quantitative research methods. Phuong Hong, the student, shared profound insights on the topic ‘Entering their worlds, touching their souls – Research is an art,’ which won first place in the Student Scientific Research Competition at Hoa Sen University. In addition to research skills and knowledge, you conveyed inspiration and positive energy to all participants.

The workshop marks the beginning of the QUANTITATIVE research series with Dr Nguyễn Phương Liên as the key trainer in the field. At Workshop # 7, Dr Nguyễn Phương Liên will provide guidance on how to identify research gaps and develop research hypotheses.
Dr Nguyễn Phương Liên’s background is Finance and Banking (Public Finance). She started her PhD studies in 2014 and was awarded the degree in 2019. Cô Liên pursued her doctoral studies out of curiosity and as a way to challenge her ability to do research and write for publication. 
The research experience sharing session is presented by Ms Võ Tấn Phượng Hồng, a HSU recent graduate. Hong Vo will bring to the workshop HSU Student Research Competition first-place topic: Entering their worlds, touching their souls- Research is an art. Võ Tấn Phượng Hồng is an education-passionate, a to-be social activist, a nature-core wanderer and a curious sunflower. She has expertise in researching, operation managing and soft-skills coaching. Hồng Võ graduated from Applied Psychology, Hoa Sen University and got admitted to McGill University for MEd in Inclusive Education.

On March 30, 2023, Faculty of Languages and International Cultures organized the 6th session of the Academic Development Seminar series, featuring the participation of Guest Doctor Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung.

Similar to previous seminars, this academic session is not only beneficial for professors who intend to publish papers but also valuable for graduate students, project-oriented undergraduates, and future researchers. Through sharing, participants will find the process of thesis writing more manageable as a paper is akin to a condensed thesis.

Accompanying Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung in the 6th Seminar is the presence of experienced research contributors: Dr. Tri Hoang Dang, Dr. Nguyen Phuong Lien, Dr. Tran Van Duong, Dr. Tran Ngoc Tien, and Dr. Le Dao Thanh Binh An. With the enthusiastic participation of these experienced researchers passionate about scientific research, it is hoped that all concerns and questions of the attendees will be adequately addressed.

The workshop is presented by our distinguished guest speaker, Dr Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung with the topic: Writing for scholarly publication in educational research. 

Dr Nguyễn Th�?Hồng Nhung is doing research in Australia. She had been a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Languages- International Cultures before working for her Ph.D. in Australia. Dr Nguyễn engaged in a variety of funded research projects and had a large number of publications in high-quality academic journals and publishers. She is currently a member of The Languages and Cultures Network for Australian Universities. 

With extensive experience in English language teaching, research practice and peer review, Dr Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung should ignite an invaluable discussion and contribute valuable insights to Workshop # 6. 

The workshop is expected to be useful for lecturers doing research for publications, students doing MA degrees or undertaking research projects and those who plan to undertake doctoral studies since understanding and knowing how to write a journal article helps with thesis writing.  

Together with Dr Nguyen Thi Hong Nhung is the presence of lecturers and researchers who have experience in the field of publication, including Dr Tri Hoang Dang, Dr Nguyen Phuong Lien, Dr Tran Ngoc Tien, Dr Tran Van Duong, Dr Le Dao Thanh Binh An. Hopefully, with a strong group of experienced writers, the discussion of the day will be thorough and insightful.  

Workshop # 6 aims to help enhance research skills and build a community of research practice as a part of professional development to make Vietnamese identity in international research publication possible.

On the morning of March 16, 2023, the Faculty of Language and International Culture organized the 5th session of the academic development seminar, with the participation of two special guest speakers with extensive research and publishing experience: Dr. Tri Hoang Dang and Dr. Susan Germein, both from Australia.

During the seminar, Dr. Tri Hoang Dang, through specific illustrations, analyzed and shared with professors, lecturers, and students how to write the Introduction and Data Analysis sections – the ‘decisive’ parts of any research thesis or scientific article.

Due to geographical distance, Dr. Susan Germein participated in the online seminar, sharing her experience of the journey of obtaining a PhD in India, a completely unfamiliar culture to her. Dr. Susan Germein will bring a perspective of a researcher in the field of ethnography. With a modern qualitative approach (post-qualitative approach), she helped us understand more about the qualitative research process and the important ethical decisions that qualitative researchers like her need to make in their thesis writing.

It is certain that the sharing of Dr. Tri Hoang Dang and Dr. Susan Germein is particularly useful for professors, lecturers, and students.

The Faculty of Languages- International Cultures is honoured to welcome all interested participants back to Professional Development Workshop # 5, scheduled on Thursday, 16 March, 2023, 9:00 am- 12 pm, Room 407, Nguyễn Văn Tráng Campus.   

This special workshop is a chance for participants to welcome, listen to and interact with the two distinguished guest speakers from Australia, Dr Trì Hoàng Đăng and Dr Susan Germein.  

Dr Trì Hoàng Đăng will lead the first section (9:00 am- 11:00 am) with a DEEP analysis of the two important but challenging parts in research paper writing: The INTRODUCTION and DISCUSSION. The discussion here centres around concerns as well as common ‘traps�?novice researchers and postgraduate students often fall prey to while writing these sections. The ‘practical�?part of the section lies in the use of REAL articles and thesis papers to illustrate and support the analysis.  

Dr Susan Germein will attend the workshop via Google Meet with a reflection on her ‘journey of an unconventional thesis�?in the context of DIFFERENT CULTURE. For those of us who are new to, or curious about ETHNOGRAPHY, this is the chance to get to know what it is like taking a POST-QUALITATIVE approach to the research process, the ethical issues and other important decisions an ethnography researcher, including Dr Susan Germein may have to make along the ‘journey�? 

Speakers�?Bios:

Trì Hoàng Đăng obtained a PhD degree in Linguistics at the University of Newcastle and an MA degree in Applied Linguistics from Curtin University of Technology, Australia. His research interests are English-medium instruction (EMI), and foreign language education policy, and World Englishes. Dr Trì Hoàng Đăng has an extensive background in teaching, and his experience in research is evident in the number of publications. 

Susan Germein has a PhD in Education from Western Sydney University. She is the Sustainability Education Advisor in the Office of the PVC-Educational Quality and Partnerships at WSU, as well as an Adjunct Research Fellow. Susan’s doctoral research was situated in a girls�?school in the Himalayan mountains of Uttarakhand. Sharing the experience of a socioecological education from the global south, the thesis invites educators to think differently about education and educational research. Susan has an extensive background in teaching and developing curriculum/pedagogy in Education for Sustainability at community, vocational education and higher education levels. She was part of a national team gaining a Green Gown Excellence in Teaching Award for a Vocational Graduate Certificate in Education and Training for Sustainability.
